Day 18: The Cost of Immaturity

The book of Judges is one big mess. Take the story of Jephthah, the Gileadite. The son of a prostitute, Jephthah is initially ostracized by his half-brothers (the current leaders of Israel) until they are in need of his brawn. He strikes a deal with them. He’ll help them if they make him their leader. The problem is that while Jephthah has the brawn to lead, he has neither the temperament nor the spiritual maturity to be a good leader. Day 17: The Jealous, Zealous God

The book of Joshua, with its bloodshed and its conquests, is a tough book to reconcile with other parts of the Bible. It is certainly a book that at times offends modern ears. A discussion about just how we should interpret these violent passages is a necessary discussion for the church but one that’s a little beyond what I can accomplish in this brief post. Day 10: Blessing in the Wilderness

Ancient biblical texts did not come with title pages. As such, the titles for books of the Bible arose in different ways. Greeks gave books titles based upon their content. Hence, in the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures, the fourth book of the Torah was given the title, “Numbers.” It does, after all, contain a lot of numbers. Day 9: My Apologies to Leviticus

I need to apologize to the book of Leviticus. Yesterday, I questioned its relevance. I called it tedious. I wrote that it was weird. Sorry about that. Today, it was still a little strange, and still tedious in places, but it was also moving, convicting, and yes, even hope inducing. What was the change? Well, once I got past all the ceremonial rules and those strange regulations concerning bodily fluids, there in the middle of this book were commands that championed justice for the least of these and mercy for the poor, the downtrodden, and the foreigner.
