Day 31: Where do you sense the holy?

Cover to Cover: 1 Chronicles 23:12-2 Chronicles 6:36

Key Passage: 2 Chronicles 3:1-17

Verse of the Day: 2 Chronicles 3:1

Key events in today’s reading:

  • Plans for the Temple (1 Chronicles 28)
  • Solomon Named King (1 Chronicles 29:21-25)
  • Death of David (1 Chronicles 29:26-30)
  • Solomon Asks for Wisdom (2 Chronicles 1)
  • Solomon Builds the Temple (2 Chronicles 3)
  • Ark Brought to the Temple (2 Chronicles 5:2-6:11)

Verse that stood out: The trumpeters and singers joined in unison, as with one voice, to give praise and thanks tot he LORD. Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals and other instruments, they raised their voices in praise to the LORD and sang:

“He is good; his love encdures forever.”

Then the temple of the LORD was filled with a cloud, and the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the temple” (2 Chronicles 5:13-14).

Yesterday, I wrote of paying attention to the presence of God. While we trust that God is everywhere and that we are never truly alone, there are obviously some places or occasions that help us become more aware of his presence. For ancient Israel, the Temple, with its sacrifices and corporate worship served as one of those places. A church sanctuary might serve a similar function for us. I’ve loved sitting in our sanctuary and hearing our congregation sing in unison together. The sound of our voices together often increases my awareness of the presence of God. I’ve had similar experiences out in nature as often as I have in a building. I often find God’s presence in the faces of those I love.

Certainly, we are called to find God’s presence in other places, as well. Part of discipleship is learning to find Christ’s face in the face of our enemy as well as in the face of our friend. That being said, there’s no reason to diminish the importance of those places or faces that most often bring us into an awareness of God’s presence. In fact, we should give thanks to God for them.

So, where do you discover God’s presence most often?

For tomorrow:

  • Cover to Cover: 2 Chronicles 6:37-22:6
  • Key Passage: 2 Chronicles 15:1-19
  • Verse of the Day: 2 Chronicles 24:20

  1. The Chronicles account is beautifully written. This year I found God’s presence in the online ABF meetings with our classmates. In giving and helping is another time I find it. In prayer. And in those challenging times when I hear the Holy Spirit reminding me to live not for myself.

  2. The 2 Chronicles account of David preparing the materials and passing the commission to Solomon and the description of the worship and prayers—that’s the specifically beautiful part. I can imagine how inspiring it would have been to the returning exiles.
